Dr. Tamara Kalubowila officially assumed his duties as the new Chairman of Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital on July 30, 2025, following his appointment by the Ministry of Health and Mass Media.
He succeeds Dr. Jayanga Tilakaratna, who resigned from the post after being transferred to Polonnaruwa Hospital. The announcement of Dr. Kalubowila’s appointment was made on July 29, 2025, marking a new leadership phase for the hospital, one of Sri Lanka’s key healthcare institutions.
Extensive Medical and Administrative Experience
Dr. Kalubowila is an alumnus of Royal College, Colombo, and earned his MBBS degree from the University of Colombo in 1986. He began his medical career at Panadura Hospital and has served in various capacities, including Medical Officer of Health and Regional Director of Health Services.
His extensive administrative experience includes his role as Medical Superintendent at Horana Hospital and directorship positions at Panadura, Horana, and Kalutara hospitals, as well as the Kalutara Health Sciences Institute.
In 2002, Dr. Kalubowila obtained a postgraduate qualification in medical administration from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, further bolstering his expertise in healthcare management.
Most recently, he served as the Regional Director of Health Services for the Kalutara District, overseeing healthcare delivery and policy implementation at the district level.
Vision for Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital
As Chairman, Dr. Kalubowila is expected to lead efforts to improve patient care services, expand hospital infrastructure, and streamline administrative processes. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to meet growing healthcare demands.
Officials from the Ministry of Health expressed confidence in Dr. Kalubowila’s ability to guide Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital towards enhanced efficiency and service excellence.
