Malé – July 30, 2025
The Government of the Maldives has officially announced that Sri Lankan citizens will now be eligible for free 90-day on-arrival tourist visas, marking a significant enhancement in bilateral relations and people-to-people connectivity between the two South Asian nations.
The policy, which comes into immediate effect, allows Sri Lankan passport holders to enter the Maldives without prior visa arrangements and stay for up to 90 days for tourism purposes, without any visa fees.
In a statement issued by the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government emphasized that the move reflects the “long-standing friendship and close cooperation” between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
“This decision is a testament to the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening regional ties and promoting mutual tourism and business opportunities,” the statement read.
🌴 Boost to Travel and Regional Ties
The visa exemption is expected to benefit Sri Lankan tourists, business travelers, and expatriates, especially with the Maldives being a popular holiday destination just an hour’s flight away from Colombo.
Tourism stakeholders in Sri Lanka have welcomed the announcement, saying it could lead to increased outbound tourism as well as new opportunities for cultural and educational exchange.
The decision also aligns with the Maldives’ broader strategy of enhancing regional mobility, promoting tourism, and deepening diplomatic ties with neighboring countries.
📌 Entry Requirements
While the visa will be granted free of charge upon arrival, travelers are advised to meet the standard entry requirements, including:
- A valid Sri Lankan passport
- Proof of accommodation in the Maldives
- Sufficient funds for the duration of stay
- A confirmed return ticket
Further guidelines may be issued by immigration authorities in the coming days.
