Rochelle Melanie Abeygunawardena, daughter of former Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena, was arrested by the Walana Anti-Corruption Unit in connection with an investigation into the alleged illegal importation and assembly of a luxury SUV.
The arrest follows her recent voluntary surrender to authorities. The vehicle in question was reportedly sold to the son of MP Jagath Vithana, who has previously been remanded in custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
Earlier in the month, a foreign travel ban was imposed on Rochelle and her husband by the Matugama Magistrate’s Court to prevent them from leaving the country amid the probe. Authorities cited concerns over potential attempts to evade the investigation.
The case has attracted significant public interest due to its links with prominent political figures and the broader implications regarding the illegal vehicle import trade. Investigations are continuing to determine the full scope of the operation and identify any further individuals involved.
