Colombo, Sri Lanka – July 30, 2025

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO. The appointment was announced on July 29, 2025, during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Education in Battaramulla.

Nalaka Kaluwawa, Secretary to the Ministry of Education, was named Vice Chairperson of the Commission. Several distinguished experts were also appointed as members, including Dr. Asha de Vos, Chandra Wickramasinghe, Dr. V.V. Madawattegedara, and Saminathan Vimal. Professor Prabath Jayasinghe will serve as the Secretary General.

The Commission’s role is to coordinate national efforts aligned with UNESCO’s mandates in education, science, culture, communication, social sciences, and environmental initiatives, supporting Sri Lanka’s sustainable development goals.

This leadership appointment signals Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with UNESCO and promoting programs for cultural preservation, scientific progress, and educational advancement.
