Maruthankerny, Jaffna – July 31, 2025 — Security forces uncovered a significant stockpile of Kerala Cannabis during a joint operation conducted early Thursday in the Vaththirayan area of Maruthankerny, Jaffna. The seized narcotics are estimated to be worth approximately Rs. 21.6 million.
The raid was carried out as part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal drug trafficking in the Northern Province. According to security sources, the stock of cannabis was discovered concealed in a remote coastal location, believed to be a transit point for smuggling operations linked to cross-border networks.
No arrests have been made at the time of reporting, but authorities confirmed that intelligence gathering is ongoing to identify the individuals or groups behind the operation. Investigators suspect that the contraband may have been brought in by sea from India, where Kerala Cannabis is commonly cultivated and trafficked.
The seized cannabis has been handed over to the Point Pedro Police Narcotics Division, which is coordinating further investigations in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Navy and intelligence services.
This seizure marks one of the largest drug interceptions in the region this year and underscores growing concerns about the resurgence of narcotics trafficking along Sri Lanka’s northern coastline. Officials have reiterated their commitment to tightening surveillance and maintaining pressure on organized drug networks operating in and around Jaffna.
