Colombo – July 31, 2025 — Newly appointed Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena announced his commitment to accelerating the digitalization of Sri Lanka’s judicial system, highlighting the need for modern technological integration in the administration of justice.

Speaking on his first official day in office, Chief Justice Surasena emphasized that the current justice system must evolve to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. He underscored the importance of embracing digital tools to reduce delays, increase transparency, and improve access to legal processes across the country.

“It is time to move forward with the digital transformation of our courts,” Justice Surasena said. “Efficiency and fairness in the judicial process cannot be compromised, and technology must now play a central role in our efforts.”

He stated that the digitalization plan would include the introduction of electronic filing systems, virtual hearings where appropriate, and improved access to court records. The move is expected to particularly benefit remote and under-resourced regions, where court infrastructure often limits timely justice.

Legal professionals and court officials have welcomed the announcement, expressing optimism about the potential improvements to case management and public confidence in the judiciary.

Justice Surasena succeeds former Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and assumes office at a time when judicial reform and institutional modernization are seen as essential steps toward a more accountable and effective legal system in Sri Lanka.
