Beijing, 31 July 2025 — Chinese authorities have officially summoned executives from U.S. technology firm Nvidia to address what they described as “serious security issues” identified in the company’s chips, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) announced today.

The CAC, China’s primary internet and cybersecurity regulator, stated that it has uncovered potential threats to national information infrastructure linked to Nvidia’s advanced graphics processing units (GPUs), widely used in artificial intelligence, data centres, and high-performance computing systems.

“The issues reported are significant and pose potential risks to our national cybersecurity framework,” said a CAC spokesperson. The regulator has requested immediate clarification and remediation from Nvidia.

While the CAC did not name specific GPU models or disclose the precise nature of the vulnerabilities, reports suggest the concerns may involve data-flow weaknesses, encryption compliance, or unauthorized access in high-end chip models that were exported to China.

Nvidia confirmed the meeting had taken place and said it is “engaging constructively” with Chinese officials. The company emphasised its commitment to global security standards and regulatory compliance.

This development occurs amid escalating technological tensions between the U.S. and China. Over the past two years, the U.S. government has imposed export controls on several Nvidia chip models—including the A100 and H100 series—citing military and dual-use concerns.

Analysts interpret China’s intervention as a move to reinforce digital sovereignty and drive reliance on domestic chip suppliers. Beijing has been accelerating efforts to develop locally produced semiconductor and AI capabilities, supported by government-backed initiatives.

The CAC said it will continue to monitor foreign tech vendors operating in China and has called for enhanced transparency and safety assurances from international chipmakers. Nvidia’s response and roadmap to resolve the concerns will be closely watched given the potential impact on its sizeable business presence in China—a key market for the company.
