Former Navy Commander Admiral (Retd.) Nishantha Ulugetenne was further remanded today by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, as investigations continue into allegations of procurement-related misconduct during his tenure.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed the court that inquiries are ongoing into suspected irregularities linked to naval equipment purchases and financial mismanagement. The case, which has garnered significant public attention, is being closely monitored by the Attorney General’s Department.

Ulugetenne, who led the Sri Lanka Navy from July 2020 to December 2022, was initially taken into custody earlier this month following a CID investigation that flagged questionable transactions. While no formal charges have yet been filed, prosecutors argued that remanding the suspect was necessary to prevent potential interference with witnesses and evidence.

The defence, representing the former Navy Commander, strongly denied any wrongdoing and maintained that all procurement decisions were taken in accordance with national policy and established procedures.

The magistrate, after considering the submissions from both parties, ordered that Ulugetenne remain in remand custody until August 14, when the case will be taken up again.

The investigation forms part of a broader government initiative to strengthen accountability and transparency in military and public sector procurement.
