BERLIN, July 31, 2025
Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called for the immediate initiation of the two-state solution process between Israel and Palestine, asserting that the time has come for the international community to formally recognize a Palestinian state.

In a press briefing held in Berlin on Wednesday, Baerbock stressed that continuing delays in political dialogue have only exacerbated instability and human suffering in the region. “The road to peace requires courage, and we believe that the process for a two-state solution — and with it, the recognition of a Palestinian state — must begin now,” she stated.

Growing European Support

Germany’s stance marks a notable shift in European diplomacy amid intensifying calls for a renewed peace framework. Several European Union member states — including Spain, Ireland, Norway, and Slovenia — have already taken steps toward recognizing Palestinian statehood, citing humanitarian concerns and the erosion of trust in existing negotiation processes.

While Germany had traditionally advocated a more measured approach, Baerbock emphasized that recent developments in Gaza, mounting civilian casualties, and regional instability necessitate a more proactive position. “We must not allow this conflict to spiral into further devastation,” she added. “Recognition must go hand-in-hand with a commitment to diplomacy, security, and international law.”

International and Domestic Reactions

The announcement has received mixed reactions from global stakeholders. Palestinian officials praised Germany’s leadership, calling the move a “powerful gesture of solidarity and justice.” In contrast, Israeli representatives expressed concern, warning that unilateral recognition could undermine direct negotiations and embolden extremist elements.

Within Germany, the foreign minister’s comments have triggered debate in both parliamentary and public circles. While many lawmakers in the Bundestag expressed support for the government’s position, others urged caution, emphasizing the need for guarantees of peace and democratic governance from the Palestinian leadership.

Outlook and Next Steps

Germany has not announced a fixed timeline for recognition, but Baerbock confirmed that Berlin is in active discussions with European partners to establish a coordinated diplomatic path forward. The goal, she said, is to support the creation of a viable, sovereign Palestinian state coexisting peacefully with Israel, in line with long-standing international resolutions.

“We cannot wait for perfect conditions that may never come,” Baerbock concluded. “What we can and must do now is lay the foundation for a just and lasting peace.”
