Tokyo – July 31, 2025 — Japan has officially lifted the tsunami advisory that was issued earlier today following a massive undersea earthquake off the coast of Russia, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), as reported by Agence France-Presse.
The advisory had been issued for parts of northern Japan, prompting coastal evacuations and widespread alerts after the magnitude 7.8 quake struck near the Kuril Islands. While initial forecasts warned of potential waves reaching up to one meter, no significant damage or large tsunami waves were ultimately recorded.
Authorities in Hokkaido and other northern regions had urged residents to move to higher ground as a precaution. Train services were temporarily suspended and several ports ceased operations until the threat was officially lifted.
The JMA stated that although the tsunami risk has now passed, minor sea level fluctuations may still occur and advised caution near coastal areas.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in Japan related to the earthquake. Russian emergency services are still assessing the impact closer to the quake’s epicenter.
