July 31, 2025 — Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has reiterated his call for all weapons in Lebanon to be placed under the exclusive control of the state. He emphasized that this goal should be achieved through dialogue with all political parties, including Hezbollah, rather than by force.
Aoun acknowledged that negotiations with Hezbollah are ongoing but progressing slowly. His stance reflects a broader vision of restoring state authority and sovereignty, particularly in areas traditionally influenced by non-state actors. He has consistently advocated for a national security strategy that consolidates all arms under government control to strengthen Lebanon’s defense capabilities and political stability.
However, this initiative faces significant challenges. Hezbollah, a powerful Shiite militant group with considerable military strength, has rejected calls for disarmament. The group views its armed status as essential for resistance against Israeli aggression and is unwilling to give up its weapons.
Meanwhile, international pressure is mounting. The United States has increased demands on Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah as part of efforts to halt Israeli military actions in the region. A US proposal includes disarming Hezbollah within four months in exchange for Israeli troop withdrawal and a cessation of airstrikes. Lebanese officials are currently deliberating on how to balance these international demands with domestic realities.
President Aoun has stressed the importance of peaceful dialogue with Hezbollah to resolve the weapons issue and avoid internal conflict. The outcome of these discussions will depend on the willingness of all parties to prioritize Lebanon’s national interests over factional agendas.
As Lebanon navigates this complex and critical issue, the coming months will be decisive in shaping the country’s security and political future.
