Valletta, Malta – 31 July 2025 — Prime Minister Robert Abela has officially announced that Malta will recognise the State of Palestine during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. The decision, he said, reaffirms Malta’s commitment to a peaceful resolution in the Middle East.

“Our country’s position reflects our commitment to finding a solution in favor of lasting peace in the Middle East,” Abela stated in a message posted on Facebook on Tuesday evening.

The announcement comes amid growing momentum within Europe, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer issuing a similar statement earlier in the day, and France recently unveiling its own intentions to recognise Palestinian statehood.

Malta had initially planned to formalise its recognition during a UN conference on Palestine in June, but the event was later postponed. Despite the delay, Abela reaffirmed that Malta remains aligned with international efforts aimed at supporting Palestinian sovereignty within a two-state framework.

Diplomatic observers view the move as part of a broader European shift in response to escalating humanitarian concerns in the occupied Palestinian territories and growing pressure on world leaders to pursue more assertive stances in Middle East diplomacy.

Malta’s recognition is expected to be formally declared during high-level proceedings at the UN in New York this September.
