Fort Lauderdale, Florida — July 31, 2025

Lionel Messi returned from suspension in spectacular fashion, delivering two assists — including a decisive pass in second-half stoppage time — as Inter Miami defeated Atlas FC 2-1 in their opening match of the 2025 Leagues Cup.

Messi, back in the starting XI after serving a one-game ban, was instrumental in Miami’s attacking rhythm throughout the night. His first assist came midway through the first half when he found Leonardo Campana with a precise through ball. Campana, in space, calmly converted to give the hosts an early advantage.

Atlas, however, responded with purpose after the break. Jordy Caicedo equalised in the 67th minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse with a composed finish past goalkeeper Drake Callender.

With the match poised for a draw, Messi once again stepped up. In the 93rd minute, he navigated through a tight midfield press and slipped a low ball into the six-yard box, where 19-year-old Benjamin Cremaschi tapped in the winner to seal all three points for the home side.

Head coach Gerardo Martino praised the Argentine star’s performance, stating, “He returned with the hunger to win. These moments — that final pass — that’s what defines players at the highest level.”

Inter Miami’s victory places them in a strong position heading into their next group stage match against Santos Laguna. For Messi, it was another reminder of his enduring influence — one that could prove pivotal in Miami’s Leagues Cup campaign.
