July 31, 2025 – Donetsk, Ukraine
Russian forces have declared the capture of Chasiv Yar, a strategic town located in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, following nearly 16 months of intense military operations. The announcement was made by the Russian Ministry of Defence in statements issued from Moscow.
The fighting around Chasiv Yar began in April 2024 when Russian troops advanced toward the town’s eastern outskirts. Despite fierce resistance from Ukrainian forces defending the area, continued Russian offensives led to the withdrawal of Ukrainian units. The town, which previously had a population exceeding 12,000, has suffered extensive damage due to sustained combat.
Ukrainian officials have yet to independently confirm the loss of Chasiv Yar, but the development is considered a significant tactical gain for Russian forces. Control over the town may facilitate further advances toward key regional centres such as Kostiantynivka, Sloviansk, and Kramatorsk.
This announcement comes amid an increase in missile and drone strikes on Kyiv, resulting in civilian casualties and widespread infrastructural damage. The escalation reflects a broader intensification of hostilities in eastern Ukraine.
International observers continue to express concern over the humanitarian impact of the conflict and emphasize the urgency of diplomatic efforts to restore peace.
