Kandy – July 31, 2025 — The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) has issued a directive temporarily suspending all drone operations along the route of the Kandy Esala Perahera, citing safety and security concerns.
The restriction will be in effect from July 30 to August 9, 2025, covering the full duration of the iconic cultural and religious procession held in the city of Kandy. The CAASL emphasized that the decision was made in coordination with local law enforcement and festival organizers to ensure the uninterrupted and secure conduct of the event.
“The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in areas of high public congregation poses a significant risk to public safety and to the orderly flow of the Perahera,” the authority stated. “This suspension applies to all civilian drone operators, including those with previously issued permits.”
Drone operators found violating the order may face legal action under existing aviation safety regulations. The CAASL has urged the public and all stakeholders to cooperate fully with the directive and refrain from using drones or any aerial recording devices within the designated no-fly zone.
The Kandy Esala Perahera, held annually in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, attracts thousands of local and international visitors. The suspension of drone activity is part of broader efforts by authorities to ensure the safety of participants, performers, and spectators.
