COLOMBO, July 31, 2025
Sri Lanka is set to introduce a comprehensive Digital Identification system by April 2026, the government announced Wednesday, emphasizing stringent measures to protect citizen privacy and ensure data security.

The Digital ID initiative forms a key part of the country’s ongoing digital transformation efforts aimed at enhancing access to public services, reducing fraud, and streamlining identity verification across sectors such as healthcare, banking, and social welfare.

Privacy and Security at Forefront

Officials assured the public that the Digital ID platform will adhere to international data protection standards and incorporate advanced encryption technologies. Regulatory frameworks will be established to govern data usage, access, and retention, aiming to safeguard individual privacy.

“Protecting the personal information of our citizens is paramount,” a senior government official said. “Our system will be transparent, secure, and accountable.”

Implementation and Benefits

Following successful pilot programs, the government plans to commence nationwide enrollment in early 2026. The Digital ID is expected to facilitate efficient delivery of government services, enhance financial inclusion, and strengthen national security by reducing identity-related fraud.

Public awareness campaigns will accompany the rollout to educate citizens about the benefits and security measures of the new system.

The government reiterated its commitment to maintaining open dialogue with stakeholders throughout the implementation process.
