COLOMBO, July 31, 2025
The tariff policy introduced by former U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to come into effect tomorrow, marking a significant shift in trade relations between Sri Lanka and the United States. The announcement comes after a series of intense negotiations between the two governments.

Minister Anil addressed the recent developments, providing insights into the discussions held and the government’s stance on mitigating the tariff’s impact on Sri Lankan exporters.

Tariff Overview and Economic Implications

The tariff imposes additional duties on selected Sri Lankan exports, notably affecting the textile and apparel sectors that are critical to the country’s economy. The government acknowledges the challenges posed by the tariff and is exploring measures to support affected industries.

Government’s Response and Future Plans

Minister Anil emphasized that the government remains committed to safeguarding national economic interests through continuous dialogue with U.S. officials. “We are actively engaging to find practical solutions and to assist exporters in adapting to these new trade conditions,” he stated.

The government also plans to introduce support mechanisms and facilitate trade diversification to reduce dependency on affected sectors.

Businesses are encouraged to prepare for the tariff’s implementation and seek guidance from relevant authorities to minimize disruptions.
