Colombo, July 31, 2025 — Two police officers from the Rathnapura Police Headquarters have been interdicted after a suspect escaped while under their custody, prompting concerns over security and procedural lapses within the police service.
The suspect, detained on charges related to theft, managed to flee during the early hours of the morning. Preliminary inquiries indicate that failures to adhere to established protocols may have facilitated the escape.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident to ascertain the circumstances that led to the breach and to implement corrective measures aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future.
The two officers, a sergeant and a constable responsible for overseeing the detainee, have been temporarily suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings.
