July 30, 2025 — Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has announced an upcoming enhancement to its AI chatbot, Grok, introducing the ability for users to generate 6-second video clips from text prompts. The new feature, called Imagine, is powered by xAI’s proprietary Aurora engine and is scheduled for release in October 2025.
Initially, the feature will be available exclusively to Super Grok subscribers, who pay a monthly fee of $30, with broader access to follow. Users can join a waitlist via the standalone Grok app to gain early access.
The Imagine tool enables users to create short, sound-enabled video clips akin to the style popularized by Vine, emphasizing rapid, shareable content. Elon Musk has described the feature as a “Vine-style reboot,” highlighting its potential to drive viral user-generated media.
However, the rollout has sparked debate, particularly over the inclusion of a “spicy mode” that permits the generation of explicit content. Critics, including advocacy groups such as the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, have raised concerns regarding potential misuse, including non-consensual AI-generated pornography. These issues have prompted calls for stronger moderation and regulatory oversight.
To support the computational demands of the new feature, xAI has invested heavily in infrastructure, adding 110,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to its supercomputer, Colossus, based in Memphis, Tennessee.
As xAI expands Grok’s capabilities, the company aims to position the chatbot as a versatile platform blending conversational AI with multimedia content generation, setting it apart in a crowded AI market.
