Kosgoda, Sri Lanka – July 31, 2025 — A 23-year-old man was shot and killed at his residence in the Duwamodara area of Kosgoda early Thursday morning in what police are treating as a targeted attack.

The victim, a local tour guide and son of a well-known turtle conservation centre owner in the area, was reportedly shot multiple times around 5:15 a.m. by two unidentified individuals who arrived at the scene on a motorcycle. Authorities say the assailants used a T-56 assault rifle before fleeing in the direction of Induruwa.

Emergency responders arrived shortly after the incident but were unable to save the young man, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His body was taken into custody for a post-mortem examination, and the residence remains under police protection as investigations continue.

Law enforcement officials have not yet identified the motive behind the killing, but initial investigations suggest that the attack was premeditated. Forensic teams have collected evidence from the scene, and police are reviewing nearby CCTV footage in an effort to track the suspects’ movements.

The killing has sent shockwaves through the local community, particularly among those connected to the tourism and conservation sectors in the southern coastal town. Police urge anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as they intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible.

This is the latest in a string of gun-related crimes reported in Sri Lanka in recent months, prompting renewed calls for enhanced law enforcement presence and firearm control measures.
