Colombo, August 1, 2025 — Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Dr. Harsha de Silva today expressed his appreciation following the United States’ decision to ease tariff pressures on selected Sri Lankan exports. Describing the outcome as one of “considerable national importance,” he thanked all individuals and institutions, both domestic and international, who played a role in securing the relief.

“I am heartily pleased by this development,” the former State Minister of Economic Reforms said in a statement issued Friday. “This will offer breathing space to our exporters—particularly in the apparel and rubber sectors—who’ve been grappling with global competition and increased input costs.”

Dr. de Silva noted that the relief was not the result of “any one party’s lobbying,” but rather the culmination of collaborative diplomatic and trade efforts, including Sri Lanka’s Embassy in Washington, trade chambers, private sector advocates, and bipartisan political support at home.

Industry experts say the tariff adjustment could help stabilize export revenues, improve cash flow among medium-scale exporters, and strengthen investor confidence at a time when Sri Lanka is still navigating its post-crisis economic recovery.

While specific tariff lines covered under the easing measures are yet to be published by the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office, the decision is expected to take effect later this quarter.

“This is a positive sign,” de Silva added, “but we must now capitalise on it through sustained reforms, trade diversification, and modernising our export sector.”

The move comes amid growing calls from Sri Lanka’s private sector for stronger trade diplomacy to ensure the country remains competitive in global markets.
