Colombo, August 2, 2025 — A man has died following a shooting incident in Pingama, Hungama (Ambalantota), police confirmed today.

According to authorities, the 32‑year‑old victim was shot dead near a local shop amid a dispute over ownership of a paddy field, described as a personal land disagreement. Investigators say the suspect used a licensed firearm and surrendered to local police shortly after the incident, handing over the weapon. The death occurred at the scene.

The shooting has triggered a formal Police inquiry under the Criminal Investigation Department, with investigators now gathering witness statements and documenting forensic evidence.

Local residents expressed shock over the violence, noting that disputes over land in the rural area are rarely resolved through such violent means. Village leaders called for calm and stressed the importance of resolving future disagreements through peaceful and legal channels.

The police have assured the public that further updates, including any possible charges, will be issued as the investigation progresses.
