Colombo, August 2, 2025 — Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has called on the government to release comprehensive details of the recently concluded trade and security arrangement with the United States, amid growing concerns over tariffs and economic implications.
Rajapaksa stressed the importance of transparency, noting that the US administration’s recent order indicates goods from trading partners will remain subject to additional tariffs until formal agreements are finalized and publicly communicated. He urged the government to promptly disclose the terms to ensure clarity for exporters, industries, and consumers alike.
Opposition parties, including the United National Party (UNP), have also demanded a clear government statement on the matter, highlighting the potential risks posed by uncertainty in trade terms to Sri Lanka’s fragile economic recovery.
Trade analysts warn that delays in providing full disclosure may impact confidence in Sri Lanka’s export sectors, particularly in textiles, rubber, and agricultural products. As neighbouring India secures tariff relief under a similar agreement with the US, Sri Lanka’s terms remain under close scrutiny.
Government officials have indicated ongoing negotiations to finalise a bilateral pact designed to enhance trade and investment relations with the US. However, the absence of public information has led to calls for greater transparency to build trust and support from the business community and the public.
Economic experts underline that openness in trade agreements is essential for investor confidence and for ensuring that benefits reach all sectors of Sri Lanka’s economy.
