Dehiowita, August 2, 2025 — More than 40 garment factory workers were injured this morning when a bus carrying them overturned on a mountainous stretch of road near Dehiowita in the Sabaragamuwa Province. The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. as the bus was travelling from Deraniyagala towards the Avissawella Industrial Zone.
According to eyewitnesses and police reports, the driver lost control on a slippery section of the winding road, causing the bus to topple. Emergency services arrived promptly at the scene, and all injured passengers were rushed to Avissawella Base Hospital for medical treatment.
Hospital sources confirmed that while many suffered injuries ranging from fractures to bruises, no fatalities have been reported so far. Several victims remain under observation, with doctors emphasizing the importance of timely medical intervention.
Residents and commuters in the area expressed concern over the safety of the frequently used route, especially during the monsoon season when roads become more treacherous. Locals called for increased safety measures and better road maintenance to prevent similar incidents in the future.
