Colombo, August 2, 2025 — In a move to bolster legislative capacity and deepen democratic practices, the official residence of Sri Lanka’s Speaker of Parliament will be converted into a dedicated Parliamentary Studies and Research Centre.
The initiative, announced by parliamentary authorities today, aims to provide a comprehensive resource centre for lawmakers, parliamentary staff, and scholars focused on governance and legislative affairs. It will house research facilities, a specialised library, training rooms, and digital tools designed to support evidence-based policymaking.
Parliamentary officials expressed hope that this transformation will not only preserve the heritage of the Speaker’s residence but also modernise parliamentary functions. The centre is intended to strengthen the knowledge base of MPs, enabling them to engage more effectively in lawmaking and oversight.
“This project reflects our commitment to enhancing the quality of governance through education and research,” a senior parliamentary official said. “It is a step towards empowering our legislators with the information and skills needed in today’s complex political environment.”
Renovations are set to begin in the coming months, with completion anticipated by mid-2026. The centre is expected to become a vital platform for parliamentary development and a regional example of legislative capacity building.
