Colombo, August 3, 2025 — The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has raised serious concerns regarding the increasing delays in the transfer process of doctors across Sri Lanka’s healthcare system. According to the GMOA, these delays have led to multiple operational challenges and have adversely affected the delivery of medical services in several regions.
The association emphasized that prolonged transfer procedures have resulted in staffing shortages in critical hospitals, disrupted continuity of patient care, and caused significant professional dissatisfaction among medical practitioners. Many doctors awaiting transfers are reportedly facing prolonged uncertainty, impacting their morale and performance.
GMOA representatives called on the Ministry of Health and relevant authorities to streamline and expedite the transfer processes, ensuring transparency and fairness. They stressed that timely transfers are essential not only for doctors’ well-being but also for maintaining efficient healthcare services nationwide.
The association warned that if these issues remain unaddressed, they could further strain the already stretched public health sector, potentially compromising patient outcomes. The GMOA pledged to continue advocating for reforms that support both medical professionals and the public’s health needs.
