Hingurakgoda, August 3, 2025 — The Sri Lankan government has confirmed its intention to complete the runway construction at Hingurakgoda Airport despite the absence of a finalized business plan outlining the project’s commercial viability.
Officials overseeing the Hingurakgoda Airport Development Project emphasized that the runway completion is a priority, citing strategic and regional development reasons. The airport, located in the Polonnaruwa District, is envisioned to bolster connectivity and support economic growth in the North Central Province.
A senior government spokesperson stated, “While a comprehensive business plan is still under preparation, the runway’s completion will enable future opportunities in aviation, tourism, and logistics to be explored more effectively.”
Critics have voiced concerns over the lack of a clear operational and financial framework, warning that proceeding without a solid business plan risks inefficient use of public resources. Some experts urge the government to finalize detailed market assessments and revenue projections before advancing further.
Local stakeholders remain hopeful that the improved infrastructure will attract investment and enhance regional development prospects.
The project continues amid ongoing debates about balancing infrastructure development with fiscal responsibility.
