Nuwara Eliya, August 3, 2025 — A Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus driver was arrested yesterday in Nuwara Eliya after being found driving under the influence of alcohol, raising concerns over passenger safety and road discipline.
The arrest took place during a routine traffic inspection when police noticed the bus exhibiting erratic driving behavior on a heavily trafficked route. A breathalyzer test conducted at the scene confirmed that the driver had consumed alcohol above the legal limit.
“The safety of passengers and all road users is paramount,” said a senior officer from the Nuwara Eliya Police. “Such reckless behavior endangers lives and will be met with strict legal action.”
The SLTB has confirmed it will conduct an internal investigation and review its policies to prevent similar incidents in the future. The affected bus was immediately removed from service pending further inquiry.
Passengers and local residents expressed their concern following the arrest. “We rely on these buses daily,” said Kamal Perera, a commuter in Nuwara Eliya. “It is disturbing to learn that those responsible for our safety might compromise it.”
This incident adds to the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in enforcing road safety regulations and ensuring responsible conduct among professional drivers.
