Liverpool, August 4, 2025 — Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has spoken movingly ahead of the club’s first home match since the passing of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, acknowledging the emotional weight that will hang over Anfield as fans gather to pay tribute.
“We know that this will also be an emotional occasion, being the first time that we have played at home since we lost Diogo,” Slot said in a heartfelt message to supporters. “I know that you will want to pay your tributes before, during and after the games, and I know that we will hear his song ringing out throughout the evening.”
Jota, 28, died last month following a tragic car accident in Portugal, a loss that has sent shockwaves through the footballing world and devastated the Liverpool community. The club, which had signed him from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, has been mourning one of its most beloved and hardworking players.
Slot, who took over managerial duties this season, added that the night would not only be about football, but about honouring a man whose spirit resonated far beyond the pitch.
“Diogo was more than a player — he was a teammate, a friend, and a true Red,” he said.
A City in Mourning
Anfield is expected to be filled with tributes, including a minute’s silence, a commemorative banner in the Kop, and fans singing Jota’s chant in unison. Several supporters’ groups have organised a pre-match tribute walk, and the club has announced that proceeds from the night’s programme sales will be donated to charities chosen by Jota’s family.
Jota made 163 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 54 goals and playing a key role in the club’s 2022 FA Cup and Community Shield victories. Known for his relentless work ethic, clinical finishing, and humble nature, he quickly became a fan favourite.
His final appearance for Liverpool came just weeks before the tragedy, during the club’s pre-season tour.
A Legacy Remembered
Players are expected to wear black armbands, and a short video tribute will be played before kickoff. Slot confirmed that the dressing room remains united in its grief — but also in its commitment to play in Jota’s honour.
“This match is for Diogo, and every match after this will carry his memory with us,” Slot said.
As Liverpool prepares to face its opponent under the lights of Anfield, the evening promises to be one of football, remembrance, and unity — a night when a club and city come together not just to cheer, but to remember.
