Colombo, August 4, 2025 — The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has summoned Sandra Perera, the personal secretary to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, to record a statement regarding an ongoing investigation into a foreign trip allegedly financed through funds allocated to the Presidential Secretariat.
The inquiry focuses on whether financial resources designated for official presidential duties were improperly used to cover expenses related to the trip. Sources close to the investigation say the CID is examining financial records and expenditure claims linked to the journey.
Ms. Perera, who served as a close aide during Wickremesinghe’s tenure, was called to the CID offices earlier this week. Authorities have not disclosed further details, citing the sensitivity of the case and ongoing nature of the probe.
Legal experts note that investigations of this nature are vital for maintaining transparency and accountability in the use of public funds at the highest levels of government.
“The public has a right to know that state resources are utilised strictly for official purposes,” said a Colombo-based legal analyst. “Any misuse of such funds undermines confidence in governance and must be addressed swiftly.”
The Presidential Secretariat has yet to issue an official statement on the matter. Meanwhile, the CID continues its efforts to gather evidence and establish facts before taking further action.
