Eleven Indian nationals, including three women, have been arrested by the Thalangama Police for allegedly operating an illegal online gambling operation out of a residence in Akuregoda, police confirmed today.

The raid was conducted late last night following a tip-off received by local authorities. Officers attached to the Thalangama Police Station uncovered a fully functioning online gambling setup, with digital equipment and software suspected to be used for betting and money transfers.

During the operation, police seized 20 mobile phones, three laptops, and a tablet device believed to have been used in facilitating the illicit activities. The suspects—eight men aged between 25 and 29, and three women aged 22, 30, and 43—are currently in custody and being questioned.

Initial investigations suggest the operation may have links to a wider regional gambling network targeting users in South Asia through online platforms.

Authorities have notified the Indian High Commission regarding the arrests. The suspects are expected to be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court later this week.

Police say investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the operation, including any local collaborators and financial transactions tied to the ring.
