Liverpool – August 4, 2025

Liverpool Football Club held an emotional tribute to their late forward Diogo Jota at Anfield on Sunday, marking the team’s first home appearance since his tragic passing earlier this year.

In a moving pre-match ceremony before the Reds’ friendly fixture against Spain’s Athletic Club, club legend Phil Thompson and Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte laid wreaths in front of the iconic Kop stand just 10 minutes before kickoff. The gesture was met with a solemn silence, followed by resounding applause and the echo of Jota’s name sung passionately throughout the stands.

The ceremony followed a series of tributes during Liverpool’s pre-season campaign. The club had previously honoured Jota during their matches against Preston North End, and during their Asia tour fixtures with AC Milan and Yokohama F. Marinos. Players wore black armbands, and a moment of silence was observed before each match.

Jota, who passed away earlier this year under circumstances that deeply affected the global football community, was a key figure for Liverpool, known for his sharp instincts, relentless work ethic, and quiet leadership. Since joining the Reds in 2020, he quickly became a fan favourite and a vital part of Jürgen Klopp’s attacking force.

Manager Arne Slot, speaking ahead of the match, acknowledged the emotional weight of returning to Anfield:

“This will be a special occasion. Emotional, yes—but one of unity and remembrance. Diogo was more than a player here—he was family. And tonight, our fans reminded the world what that means.”

As fans held up scarves and sang Jota’s chant in unison, the stadium became a sea of red and reverence, a testament to a player whose legacy remains etched in Liverpool’s story.

Liverpool will continue their preparations for the upcoming season with another friendly against Athletic Club, but it is clear the spirit of Diogo Jota will be present in every match played under the Anfield lights.
