Colombo – August 5, 2025

Opposition MP Mujibur Rahman today called on the government to ensure equal accountability for all public officials, stating that those involved in recent misconduct should face the same consequences as former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon.

Speaking in Parliament, Rahman referenced several recent incidents involving individuals linked to the Presidential Secretariat and security personnel attached to the Head of State.

“We have heard that the vehicle in which the wife of the President’s secretary had travelled knocked down several people and injured them. The President’s secretary should resign from his post. However, it has not happened,” the MP said.

Rahman also criticised the handling of an incident involving members of the President’s security detail. “Some security officers of the President were transferred for purchasing liquor on their return from a foreign trip with the Head of State. These officers should have been fired instead,” he added.

Drawing parallels with the recent legal and political action taken against Deshabandu Tennakoon, Rahman insisted that selective accountability undermines public trust and called for consistent disciplinary action across all levels of government.

“You must deal with these persons in the same way you dealt with Deshabandu,” Rahman urged, addressing the ruling party benches.

The comments come amid heightened scrutiny of government officials following the controversial resignation of former IGP Tennakoon, who stepped down amid mounting legal and political pressure over his conduct during and after the 2022 unrest.
