RB Leipzig have opened discussions with Liverpool over a potential transfer for midfielder Harvey Elliott, as the Bundesliga side look to reinforce their attacking midfield following the departure of Xavi Simons.

According to sources familiar with the matter, talks between the two clubs are still at an early stage, but Leipzig are actively exploring Elliott as a serious option to fill the creative void left by Simons’ exit.

The 22-year-old, who featured in 51 matches across all competitions for Liverpool last season, is highly regarded at Anfield, both for his versatility and technical ability. However, with Liverpool undergoing a significant reshaping of their midfield and forward lines this summer, the club is open to evaluating offers—provided they meet their valuation.

Liverpool Set Firm Price

Liverpool are understood to value Elliott at over £40 million if a buy-back clause is included in any deal. Without such a clause, the price rises to above £50 million, reflecting the club’s desire to retain future control over a player they still view as having high potential.

Jörg Schmadtke, RB Leipzig’s sporting director, is believed to be leading exploratory talks, with the German club keen to strike a deal that gives them long-term security while accommodating Liverpool’s interest in retaining a future link to Elliott.

Xavi Simons’ move away from Leipzig—following the end of his loan spell from PSG—has left a notable creative gap in Marco Rose’s midfield setup. Leipzig see Elliott not as a like-for-like replacement, but as a player with the profile to grow into a central role within their energetic, attacking system.

With Liverpool currently focused on resolving the Alexander Isak pursuit and reinforcing their defence, it remains to be seen how quickly the Elliott situation will progress.
