Washington/Tel Aviv — August 5, 2025

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly expressed support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to escalate military operations, amid intensifying regional tensions, according to sources familiar with ongoing diplomatic conversations.

While Trump holds no official position, his influence remains significant in Republican and international right-wing political circles. Senior Israeli officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Trump gave what they interpreted as a “green light” during private discussions for Israel to pursue a “decisive operation” in response to escalating threats, particularly from Hezbollah and Iranian-aligned militias.

Neither the Trump team nor Netanyahu’s office has officially confirmed the details of the conversation, but Israeli media and political analysts have noted a shift in tone from Netanyahu following the reported exchange. Israeli military movements in the north and Gaza have also intensified over the past 48 hours.

Political observers say Trump’s backing could embolden Netanyahu at a time when his government faces both internal legal challenges and growing international scrutiny over its handling of the Gaza conflict.

The U.S. State Department under President Joe Biden has not commented on Trump’s reported involvement but reiterated Washington’s official stance of urging restraint and prioritising diplomatic solutions to regional conflict.

Tensions remain high across the region, with airspace closures, troop alerts, and cross-border exchanges of fire fueling fears of a broader confrontation.
