Hyderabad, India — A Bureau of Immigration official at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has been formally accused of stalking a 24-year-old Sri Lankan woman passenger during a prolonged transit halt, police confirmed.

The incident took place on August 3 when the student, pursuing an undergraduate music degree in Chhattisgarh, arrived from Colombo on an IndiGo flight. After completing immigration procedures, the official reportedly asked if she was alone and gave her his contact number, offering assistance.

Later that evening, the official allegedly called the student repeatedly, urging her to meet him at the airport’s car park and suggesting various invitations including a city tour, dinner, and a place to rest. When the student refused, the calls persisted, causing her distress.

Following advice from a friend, she reported the matter to airport police in the early hours of the next day. Authorities registered a case under Section 78(1)(i) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to stalking.

Police identified the suspect as an immigration staff member based on the provided phone number and are gathering evidence. The official has been issued a notice to appear for questioning as the investigation continues.

The case underscores growing concerns over the safety of passengers during transit and the responsibility of airport staff to maintain professional conduct.
