Colombo, Sri Lanka – A 35-year-old resident of Colombo 06 was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport for attempting to smuggle a significant cache of high-value electronic devices, including mobile phones and tablets, without proper documentation.
The arrest was made during a targeted operation by the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) Airport Division, officials confirmed on Monday.
Authorities said the suspect was found in possession of 349 mobile phones and 17 tablets, with the estimated value of the seized goods exceeding Rs. 50 million. The items were concealed in a manner intended to bypass customs inspections.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect may have been part of a larger smuggling network bringing in high-end consumer electronics, potentially for black market distribution.
Officers are now working to determine the origin of the devices and whether additional accomplices are linked to the operation.
The CID has launched a full investigation into the incident, and the suspect is expected to be produced in court.
