Colombo — The Sri Lankan government plans to introduce special regulations for businesses serving tourists in the popular Arugam Bay area, the Acting Director of the Police Tourism Division, ASP Prabath Widanagama, announced.
Authorities will closely monitor foreigners entering on tourist visas who engage in commercial activities, signaling a stricter approach to managing the local tourism economy.
Recent attention has focused on a viral video showing signboards in Arugam Bay predominantly written in Hebrew, sparking public debate about language use and cultural representation. Officials stressed that while concerns are being addressed, the safety and well-being of all visitors—including Israeli tourists—remain a top priority during their stay.
The move aims to balance welcoming international tourists with preserving local culture and ensuring compliance with visa regulations.
