Colombo, Sri Lanka — The Department of Meteorology has issued a Warm Weather Advisory warning residents in parts of the country to brace for intensified heat over the coming days, as the heat index — the temperature felt by the human body — is expected to reach ‘Caution’ level in several districts.
The advisory covers the North-Central and Eastern provinces, along with Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Monaragala, and Hambantota districts. The warning indicates that residents in these areas may experience increased fatigue and risk of heat cramps, especially with prolonged exposure or strenuous activity outdoors.
The Meteorology Department emphasized that the heat index is not the same as actual air temperature. It is a combination of relative humidity and temperature, designed to reflect how hot conditions feel on the human body.
Public Health Precautions Urged
Authorities have advised the public to take the following steps:
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Limit outdoor activity, especially during midday hours. Take breaks in shaded or cool areas when working outside. Wear light-colored, breathable clothing. Check on the elderly, children, and the sick, who are more vulnerable to heat stress. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, even for a short time.
The Department continues to monitor the heat levels using global numerical weather prediction models, and further updates will be issued as necessary.
