Over 200 people gathered on August 5 at the Chemmani mass grave site in northern Sri Lanka, searching for traces of their loved ones who were forcibly disappeared during the civil conflict. But as officials began identifying the items recovered from recent excavations, not a single belonging could be conclusively linked to any of the missing.

Families, many of whom have spent decades hoping for closure, left the site with broken hearts and unanswered questions. No clothing, jewellery, or personal effects bore the marks of those they lost — no names, no identifiers, nothing to bring certainty to their grief.

The Chemmani site has long been tied to allegations of mass extrajudicial killings and secret burials. Yet for those who came seeking truth, the silence of the soil has only deepened the pain.

Empty-handed but not defeated, the families returned home — some clutching photographs, others holding prayer beads — all still searching for answers that remain buried.
