Colombo, Sri Lanka — Airport authorities arrested three Indian nationals at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) early Wednesday for allegedly attempting to smuggle in over Rs. 12 million worth of Kush cannabis.
The suspects — a 42-year-old man and two women aged 43 and 22 — were apprehended by officers of the Airport Police Narcotics Bureau shortly after they arrived in Sri Lanka on Malaysia Airlines flight MH-179 from Kuala Lumpur, which landed at 12:03 a.m. today.
According to police, the suspects — identified as Indian businesspeople — had concealed 12.16 kilograms of high-grade Kush cannabis inside their luggage. The narcotics were packed in sealed packets and wrapped in carbon paper, a method seemingly aimed at evading detection by airport scanners.
The trio is expected to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court today on charges related to drug importation, possession, and trafficking. Authorities confirmed that the suspects will be remanded pending further investigation.
The seizure marks another significant interception amid heightened efforts by Sri Lankan law enforcement to curb international drug trafficking through the country’s airports.
