Geneva, Switzerland — Amnesty International Secretary-General Agnes Callamard has strongly condemned the Israeli cabinet’s recent approval of plans to expand military operations in Gaza, including a full takeover of Gaza City.

Calling the move “utterly outrageous and revolting,” Callamard warned that the escalation will bring about “extraordinary” levels of suffering for Palestinians, many of whom are already enduring starvation and severe hardship across the Gaza Strip.

“This expanded military operation will inevitably lead to additional mass atrocities,” she said in an official statement, adding that it constitutes a clear violation of international law.

Callamard stressed that while the world had hoped the cruellest chapters of the ongoing conflict were behind them, Israel’s continued use of starvation as a method of warfare, now coupled with plans for intensified assault on Gaza City, signals that “the worst is yet to come.”

Her remarks underscore growing international concern over the humanitarian impact of the war and the urgent need for de-escalation to protect civilians trapped in the conflict.
