Munich, Germany — Bayern Munich has announced it will reduce the visibility of its “Visit Rwanda” branding, signaling a step back from its commercial partnership with the East African nation. The decision comes amid mounting international criticism of Rwanda’s alleged support for rebel groups operating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The football club signed a five-year sponsorship deal with Rwanda in 2023, featuring prominent advertising within its stadium and promotional events aimed at boosting tourism and investment in the country. At the time, Bayern dismissed claims that the partnership was a form of “sportswashing,” a practice where governments use sports to polish their international reputations despite questionable political actions.

Recent scrutiny over Rwanda’s role in the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo has intensified, prompting Bayern to reconsider its association. The club’s move reflects growing awareness in the sports world of the complex ethical issues surrounding partnerships with nations implicated in regional instability.

This development highlights the increasing pressure on global sports institutions to balance commercial interests with social responsibility and ethical considerations.
