Tehran, Iran — Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, warned on Saturday that Iran will prevent the establishment of a planned transport corridor in the Caucasus, regardless of whether Russia supports it.
The corridor, part of a regional agreement brokered under former US President Donald Trump, is designed to link Azerbaijan to its exclave of Nakhchivan through Armenian territory. Iranian officials have long opposed the plan, saying it could undermine Iran’s regional influence and disrupt established borders.
Speaking to Iranian media, Velayati reaffirmed Tehran’s position, stating that “with or without Russia, Iran will block” the project. The statement underscores heightened tensions in the South Caucasus, where geopolitical rivalries between regional powers have intensified in the aftermath of recent conflicts between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
