California, USA — A man accused of stealing rare Chinese manuscripts from a prestigious university library has been formally charged with theft amounting to $216,000.

Jeffery Ying allegedly borrowed valuable manuscripts from the University of California’s library collection but returned counterfeit copies in their place, authorities said. Investigations revealed a pattern of the suspect frequently traveling to China shortly after borrowing the materials, raising suspicions of possible illicit dealings.

The case has drawn attention to vulnerabilities in safeguarding priceless cultural artifacts in academic institutions. Legal proceedings are ongoing as officials work to recover the original manuscripts and determine the full extent of the theft.
