Jerusalem, Israel — Nida Ibrahim, Al Jazeera correspondent, has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of deliberately extending the ongoing war in Gaza to maintain his hold on power amid mounting legal troubles and political instability.

Ibrahim said Netanyahu, currently facing corruption charges, sees the conflict as a way to secure his fragile coalition government and delay any threats to his leadership. “He is really interested in prolonging the war because that would keep him in power longer,” she explained.

The war’s continuation also aligns with long-standing ambitions within Israel’s far-right factions, including ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, who have openly advocated for what Ibrahim described as ethnic cleansing.

Earlier remarks by the Israeli defence minister about forcibly relocating Gaza’s population to so-called “safe evacuation zones” — areas critics compare to concentration camps in southern Gaza — underscore the extreme measures being considered.

Ibrahim’s analysis highlights the complex interplay between political survival and military escalation in one of the world’s most protracted conflicts, with devastating consequences for civilians caught in the crossfire.
