Colombo — Sri Lanka has voiced deep concern over Israel’s decision to take control of Gaza City, warning that the move risks escalating violence and worsening the humanitarian crisis for the people of Gaza.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sri Lanka called for an immediate ceasefire and urged all parties to resolve differences through diplomatic dialogue to achieve lasting peace.

The Israeli security cabinet on Friday approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan for full military control of Gaza City, a decision announced after a late-night cabinet meeting. The plan stops short of occupying the entire Gaza Strip, reportedly reflecting caution from Israel’s military leadership over the safety of around 20 hostages held by Hamas and the strain of prolonged regional conflicts.

Israel currently controls about 75% of Gaza, with most of the territory’s two million residents concentrated in the remaining areas. Gaining full control would require ground operations in regions not yet destroyed, where civilians have sought refuge.
