Istanbul, Turkey — Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators filled the streets of Istanbul on Friday night, protesting Israel’s military actions in Gaza and highlighting the deepening humanitarian crisis in the besieged territory.
Gathering at Beyazit Square on August 9 under the slogan “Be the Light of Hope for Gaza,” the crowd set off after evening prayers, marching toward the historic Ayasofya Mosque. Many carried lanterns, a symbol of solidarity and hope for Gaza’s residents living under siege, facing starvation and severe shortages of basic supplies.
The demonstration was both solemn and impassioned, with chants condemning Israel’s actions and speeches urging the international community to act to stop what protesters described as an ongoing genocide. Organisers said the lantern-lit procession was meant to remind the world that Gaza’s plight should not be ignored.
The march came amid escalating violence and worsening conditions in Gaza, where health officials and aid agencies warn that civilians are bearing the brunt of the conflict, with access to food, water, and medical care collapsing under the blockade.
