QUITO, Ecuador — Eight people were killed and two others wounded when a group of armed men opened fire on a crowd gathered outside a nightclub in a town in southwestern Ecuador, police said on Sunday.
Witnesses reported chaos as gunfire erupted without warning, sending people scrambling for cover. Authorities confirmed that the victims died at the scene, while the injured were taken to hospital in serious condition.
Police have launched an intensive search for the attackers, but no arrests have been announced. Officials have not disclosed a possible motive, though the country has faced a sharp rise in violence linked to organised crime and drug trafficking.
Ecuador has seen a surge in deadly attacks in recent years, with gang rivalries spilling into public spaces and threatening civilian safety. Security forces say operations are under way to restore order and track those responsible for the nightclub shooting.
