Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — Saudi Arabia has welcomed Australia’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state and expressed appreciation for New Zealand’s announcement that it is reviewing its position on the matter.
In a statement, the Saudi foreign ministry commended what it described as growing international consensus in support of the two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. The ministry stressed that the current period calls for advocates of peace to take concrete steps toward recognition and to support efforts to end the prolonged conflict, especially amid what it described as Israel’s continued violations of international and humanitarian law.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government would formalize recognition at next month’s United Nations General Assembly. The decision follows similar moves by France, Britain, and Canada, aimed at increasing diplomatic pressure on Israel.
In Wellington, New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters confirmed that his country is actively considering recognition of a Palestinian state, signaling a potential shift in its long-standing Middle East policy.
